What is an IMEI?

An IMEI is the 15-digit serial number that identifies a mobile device. Its first 8 digits — the TAC — encode the make and model; the last digit is a checksum that catches typos. You can usually find it by dialing *#06#, or in your phone's settings.

What this tells you

  • • The manufacturer and model the IMEI belongs to.
  • • Whether the 15-digit number passes its checksum.
  • • The TAC, serial, and check-digit breakdown.

What it doesn't

  • • It is not a blacklist, stolen, or lost-device check.
  • • It does not report carrier-lock or warranty status.
  • • A valid checksum does not mean a device is clean to buy.
